Teeli E. Virta Obituary
Teeli Emil Virta, a lifelong Quincy resident, returned to the side of his late and loving wife of 65 years, Antonette (Artese) Virta, when he took an afternoon nap Friday, February 3, 2017, while basking in the warm glow of sunshine streaming through his window, and slipped peacefully away. He was 94. Born and raised in Quincy, he was one of five children born to the late Emil and Tekla (Pietala) Virta. He graduated Quincy Trade School and worked for a short time at the Fore River Shipyard before enlisting in the U.S. Army the day before his 20th birthday. He served his country with honor during World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps 387th Bomb Squadron Depot, seeing action in the South Pacific, and was discharged with the rank of Staff Sgt. Following his military service, Mr. Virta worked for many years with Local 17 Sheetmetal Workers Union, and was also a member of its retirees association. A skilled craftsman and woodworker, he enjoyed making many pieces of high quality furniture over the years, and enjoyed being outdoors. He especially relished the time spent cultivating his vegetable garden, and would share his harvest with family and friends. He was the loving father of Michael R. Virta and wife Edith (Warren) of Pembroke and Richard J. Virta of Hanson; cherished grandfather to Amy McNamara, Kevin Virta, Kaitlyn Leonard, Stephen Virta and Michelle Virta; great-grandfather to Samantha, Dominick, Kendyl, Alicia and Harrison. He was the dear brother of the late Toivo Virta, Taimi Korpela, Tyyne Fish and Taino Ash. Also survived by nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited, will be held at the Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Funeral Home, 26 Adams St., Quincy Center, Friday, February 10, at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors to follow at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. Visiting hours Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Quincy Center
