William B. Gallagher Obituary
William B. Gallagher, 90, passed away October 1, 2016. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to the late Ruth M. (Barry) Gallagher. He was the son of the late William and Anna (Woelfel) Gallagher. Mr. Gallagher served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy during World War ll, seeing significant action overseas while serving aboard the USS Hugh W. Hadley in the South Pacific. He retired after many years of employment by the City of Boston, but his true passion was captaining commercial vessels in Boston Harbor. He shared his love of harbor lore and history on guided tours both on and off the water. He was a valued volunteer for over twenty five years for the Coast Guard Auxillary, the Castle Island Association and the Quincy Historical Society. He was the loving father to Elizabeth Duval and her husband David of Quechee, Vt., David W. Gallagher and his wife Christine of Jacksonville, Fla., Carol Gallagher of Reading, Marie Gallagher and her fiance Charles Card of Weymouth, William B. Gallagher and his wife Elizabeth of Newton and Ruth McConville and her husband John of Quincy; dear brother of Anne Obergfell of Danbury, Conn., and the late Eleanor Green, Donald Gallagher and Paula Grant; cherished grandfather to Daniel, Krista and Kara Duval, Emma, Anna and Matthew Sampson, Mitchell and Kaylee Gallagher and Charlotte McConville. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. His funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited, will be held Thursday, October 6, at 11 a .m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel of Holy Trinity Parish, 227 Sea Street, Quincy. Visiting hours are Wednesday, October 5, at the Hamel, Wickens and Troupe Funeral Home, 26 Adams Street, Quincy Center, from 4-7 p.m. Interment will be Friday, October 7, at 11:15 a.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Due to flower restrictions at the National Cemetery, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to the American Red Cross, 274 Tremont Street, Boston, MA 02116.
