Rita Lorraine Kaufman Gilbert died peacefully in her sleep on January 5, 2018 at Brooksby Village, Peabody, MA. She was 99 years old and was in good health up until her death. She was born December 4, 1918 in Philadelphia to Claire (Grossman) Kaufman and Nathan Kaufman, Ukrainian and Polish Jewish immi- grants. She attended Simon Gratz High School. She married and moved to Lexington, MA, raised a family, and lived there for many years. She was predeceased by her sister Sylvia Kaufman Zaroff. She is survived by her children Nancy Gilbert of Vieques, PR, Jacqueline Gilbert and son-in-law John Gillerman of Highland Park, NJ, and Lawrence Gilbert and daughter-in-law Maureen Caron Gilbert of N. Chelmsford, MA; by her sister-in-law Evelyn Harris of E. Lyme CT; by her first cousin Richard Mayer of Diamond Springs, CA; by her nieces Lisa Nicolai, Terry Zaroff-Evans, and Andrea Harris; by four grandchildren Hannah Gilbert, Zachary Gilbert, Adrian Gillerman, and Sophia Gillerman, and two grand-nephews and a grand-niece. She worked for many years at Digital Equipment Corporation. After she retired she fulfilled a life-long dream and travelled | to China, Alaska, Israel, Ireland, and England. She enjoyed cooking, was a beautiful knitter, an avid reader, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She often volunteered, including many years with Hospice. She was a vitamin fanatic and was committed to daily medit- ation. She took pleasure in gardening and tending to lots of indoor plants. She loved cats and they loved her back. Her warmth and contributions to all our lives is deeply missed. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday February 17th at Brooksby Village in Peabody. Donations can be made to the Hospice Foundation of America.
