Donald M. MacDonald, 91, of Winchester, formerly of Ironwood, Michigan, died peacefully at home on Feb. 10, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Ironwood, Michigan on Oct. 15, 1921, the son of Roderick and Eunice (Coole) MacDonald. He attended Ironwood schools and graduated form Luther L. Wright High School in 1939. Don enlisted in the Marine Corps. in June of 1942 and served in the Asia Pacific area on Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima, where he was wounded in action against the enemy. He subsequently was awarded the Purple Heart
Medal and was honorably discharged in November 1945. Upon discharge, he moved to the Boston area and attended Harvard University
. After graduation in 1948, he joined the First National Bank of Boston, becoming Vice President. He retired in 1980 to go into consulting. He served as president of the Greater Boston Bankers Association, was a member of the Harvard Club of Boston for 51 years and was also a member of the Rochester, NH American Legion. Donald was married to the late Carol (Taylor) MacDonald and they had three children: Donald of Chicago, Roderick, who pre-deceased him in 2001, and Janice MacDonald and her husband Brian Rogers of Winchester. He married his devoted and beloved wife Virginia (Hughes) MacDonald, and they lived in Winchester for 35 years. He also leaves seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his beloved niece Margaret Zerbst of Hale, MI. A Memorial Service will be held at the Crawford Memorial United Methodist Church, 34 Dix St., at the corner of Dix and Church St., Winchester on Fri., Feb. 15 at 1PM followed by full military honors. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester at a later date.
