K. Paul Chase., of Winchester, Massachusetts and Naples, FL passed away on September 6, 2013 at the age of 87 due to complications from Parkinsons Disease. Paul was a businessman, traveler, philanthropist and outdoorsman. Paul is survived by his wife of 64 years Grace (Bowman) Chase; four children: Andrea Chase of Methuen, MA and her long time companion Rick Benson; Hillary (Chase) OConnor of Concord and West Falmouth, MA and her husband Dan, Kenneth Paul (Kip) Chase of Indian Lake, NY and his wife Jani; Allison (Chase) Stires of Bridgewater, NJ and her husband David; and his seven grandchildren: Alexandra Spang, Christina Spang, Diana Spang, Peter OConnor, David OConnor, Jacqueline Stires and David Stires. Paul was born in Salem, MA on June 19, 1926. Paul attended Salem High School and graduated in 1943. Paul enlisted in the U.S. Navy
and served as a Signalman aboard DD-839 Gearing Class Destroyer USS Power during WWII
. During his time in the service, Paul was able to attend both Columbia and Dartmouth College under the Navys V-12 Program, and subsequent to the service and with the help of the GI Bill attended Babson College graduating in 1949. Paul was a longtime member of Babson Board of Overseers and the Babson Corporation. He also served as President of the Class of 49 Alumni Group, was a longtime member of the Class of 49 Scholarship Committee, and a dedicated volunteer for the College. The class of 49 has the distinction of being the most philanthropic class, of any class, in the school. He was also the proud parent of a Babson alumna from the MBA Class of 1984. During his business career, Paul and business partner Chris Weld acquired and ran Thomas Strahan Company (wallpaper manufacturer located in Chelsea, MA) which they sold to National Gypsum, a former Fortune 50 company. He was a former investor and President of Woodcraft Supply Company. Over the years, Paul was an investor in many business entities and partnerships. Paul served in various roles and capacities such as Director, Chairman & CEO, President and as an Officer of numerous corporations. Board roles included National Gypsum, The 99 Restaurants, H.K. Porter, Inc., Woodcraft Supply Company, Chelsea Clock, Hampshire Printed Fabrics, Dunham Shoe Company, among others. Paul founded the Wallcovering Manufacturers Association. Paul was a former Selectman of Winchester, MA. Director of the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, Trustee of the Chelsea Memorial Hospital and a Director of the Winchester chapter of the American Red Cross. He was active in Boston YMCAs north suburban branch; Paul co-founded Hi-Flight, a program for troubled teens. In retirement, Paul volunteered for Habit for Humanity in Florida and the Travelers Aid Society at Logan Airport one day a week. Philanthropic endeavors closest to Paul included establishing scholarships at Babson College and Wellesley College. The K. Paul Chase 49 Endowed Scholarship at Babson College and the Grace Bowman Chase 1948 Endowed Fund for Financial Aid at Wellesley College. North Suburban YMCA (Woburn), Winchester Hospital and many other charities and goodwill causes all over Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and the United States. Paul was a lifelong boater and enjoyed golf and tennis. During his life, he owned many boats both sail and power in Marblehead, West Falmouth and Florida. He loved deep sea fishing, sailboat racing and trekked in Nepal. At the time of his passing, Paul was a long time member of the Winchester Country Club (at one time served on the board) and Wyndemere Country Club, Naples FL., He was also a past member of Pocasset Golf Club, Corinthian Yacht Club of Marblehead and other tennis and yacht clubs on Cape Cod. A memorial service will be held at the Parish of the Epiphany Church, 70 Church Street, Winchester, MA on Thursday, September 12, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either of the following: Check made out to: Babson College.
