Elizabeth (Martz) Freeman ("Lisa") of Peterborough, NH, and formerly of Winchester and Newton, MA, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2012, at home. She was a devoted mother and wife, and a strong, quiet, brilliant, selfless women who was unique for her time. Lisa was born on February 8, 1927 in Laurium, Michigan, daughter of the late Elsa Baalack Martz and Lieutenant Colonel Forrest Martz (who served in WWI, WWII and Korea). After some moves during the Depression to Texas and Indiana, she grew up in Newton Highlands, where she met her husband, Richard W. Freeman, an engineer and graduate of Tufts. After marriage in 1952, they settled in Winchester for 41 years before moving to Peterborough, NH. Lisa graduated from Smith College in 1948, and spent her junior year at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, where she impressed her professors with her command of the French language. While attending the Cambridge School of Weston, Lisa spent two summers as a teenage "human computer" at MIT engaged in military ballistics calculations and the preparation of trajectory tables as part of the war effort. As a WWII "Rosie," Lisa worked long hours with such notable astrophysicists and mathematicians as Luigi Jacchia, Zdenek Kopal, and Norbert Wiener (originator of cybernetics). After college, she returned to MIT and worked in the Aeroelastics Laboratory until 1951, when she transferred to the Supersonic Wind Tunnel as head of their computing department. Lisa continued to work at MIT until the late 1950's until her first child arrived. After her children, two sons, reached Junior High, she enjoyed part-time work as credit manager for various small firms. In Winchester, Lisa devoted years to the local Smith College Club, Winchester Trails (a local educational group), the Cub Scouts (as den mother), the local and state League of Women Voters, the Community School Association, a ladies investment club, and other organizations. She would quickly rise to President or Treasurer of some of these organizations due to her abilities. Lisa thoroughly enjoyed sailing. Her experience began at Camp on Cape Cod as a child, continued at MIT where she sailed during her lunch hours, and later with her husband and family when they acquired a 42-foot sloop, "Nakoni." She also sailed in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, and motored on a canal boat in France. For over 50 years she was a member of the "White Mountain Ski Runners," a 75+ year old ski club in North Conway, NH, with Boston-based membership. Lisa enjoyed traveling. In 1956, she drove cross-country with her husband visiting National Parks and the Canadian Rockies. She shepherded her sons and niece abroad as young teens to expose them to the culture of England, Scotland and Paris. Later, Lisa and her husband traveled extensively on the continent and in Europe and New Zealand. Lisa is survived by her husband Richard W. Freeman of Peterborough, NH; her two sons, Eric Alden Freeman of Wayland, MA, and Christopher Atwood Freeman of Oakland, CA; her daughter-in-law Kathleen J. Freeman, Esq., and grandson Alexsandr R. Freeman (Eric's wife and son). A Memorial Service will be held at the Union Congregational Church in Peterborough, NH on Saturday, February 11 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at www.dana-farber.org or the Home Healthcare, Hospice & Community Services (HCS, P.O. Box 496, Peterborough, NH 03458; www.hcsservices.org) in memory of Elizabeth (Martz) Freeman.
