WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — James Harvey Hughes, 73, of Williamson, passed away Sun., April 27, 2014, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.

James had fought a very valiant and courageous battle with cancer. He was an inspiration to everyone who knew him as he remained strong and hopeful throughout his journey.

Born Dec. 12, 1940, at Kermit, he was a son of the late John Henry and Sidney Jude Hughes. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Minnie Felix and Edith Stacy.

He was formerly employed as a security agent with Mountain Enterprise and retired from that position after many years of dedicated service. When his health permitted he attended services at the United Baptist Church where enjoyed singing so very much.

He was a devoted family man who excelled in his role as a husband, father and grandfather.

He enjoyed being a grandfather and was happy that he could be a part of the day to day lives of all his grandchildren. He loved his daughters and was completely devoted to each of them. He was also devoted to his beloved, wife, Loretta, and she, in turn, was always by his side throughout their married life together.

He was an avid Williamson Wolfpack and later a Mingo Minor fan. He followed the athletic careers of his grandsons, seldom missing a game. He was in attendance when his grandson, Nick, scored the first touchdown and then the first basket in the history of Mingo Central football and basketball. His grandson Alex was also a standout athlete at both schools. James also made every effort to attend the sporting events of Connor, Devin and Trevor when his health permitted. He was proud of his grandsons. They each meant the world to him.

Being very health conscious, James exercised regularly and especially enjoyed walking.

James was a special man whose beloved memory will remain with his family friends always. He is sadly missed and lovingly remembered.

James is survived by his wife, Loretta Caudill Hughes; three beloved daughters, Angie (Rick) Lee of Chattaroy, Lora (Sean) Gilbert of Pikeville, Ky., and Libby (Terry Mounts) Goff of South Williamson; a brother, Phillip Hughes of Toledo, Ohio; two sisters, Ruby (Led) Bryant of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Emogene Burgett of Hatfield, Ky., and five grandchildren, Nick and Alex Lee, Connor and Devin Goff and Trevor Gilbert.
