BLACKBERRY CITY, W.Va. — Mary Smith Ward, 96, formerly of Blackberry City, died Thurs., Dec. 12, 2013.

Born Feb. 18, 1917, at Lynn, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Matilda Hackney Smith. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Wesley H. Ward; brothers, Jesse, Alfred and Lloyd Smith; sisters, Arminda, Marie and Fannie, and daughter, Earlene Blankenship.

Mary was a former beautician, ship fitter in World War II, having worked in Baltimore, Md., on the Liberty and Victory and LST Landing Barge. Mary was an honor roll student at Southern West Virginai Community College, received a degree in education at Bluefield State and graduated at the age of 75. She was the past president of the WV Silver Haired Legislators; Past Matron of the order of the Eastern Star; and the Past Noble Grand Member of the Rebekah's Lodge No. 18 of Matewan. Mary was also of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her daughters: Louise Pope of Taylorsville and Jean (Harold) Denny of King, N.C.; brothers: Willard Smith, Robert Smith, Estil Smith and J. Michael Smith; sisters: Earlene (Richard) Stafford, Dorothy Mae Smith and Maggie Smith; grandchildren: Rocky Pope, Elbert Pope, Robert "Rob" Hamilton, Bryan Long, and Leah (Randall) Lester; great-grandchildren: April Pope, Christy Goad, Brandi Pope, Elbert Pope II, Sarah Long, Ryan Long, Abigail Long, Isabella Goode, Mason Long, Ryan Hamilton, Kaycee Lester and Adam Lester, and great-great-grandchild: Hailey Renae Goode.

Services will be held at noon Tues., Dec. 17, at Chambers Funeral Services Chapel with Pastor Carl Butler officiating. Burial will follow in Blackberry City Cemetery at Blackberry City.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
