Thomas Gannaway

NORTH MATEWAN, W.Va. — Thomas C. Gannaway, 88, of North Matewan, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at his home.

Born December 22, 1924, at Amherst, Va., he was a son of the late William Maurice and Ruth Cunningham Gannaway. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Julia Joann Charlton Gannaway, whom he married on September 30, 1951.

Tom was instrumental in creating the Virginia Tech Football Radio network which was first introduced on September 17, 1955, on the road at Wake Forest. He was in the class of 46' at Virginia Tech but because of being called to active duty he did not graduate till 1950. Tom graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Electrical Engineering and also earned a degree in Business Administration from George Washington University. In 1972, Tom earned another degree from Virginia Tech in Urban & Regional Planning. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his sons, Thomas C. Gannaway II and wife Jenny of North Matewan and William C. Gannaway and wife Jeannette of Sterling, Va.; daughter, Anne C. White and husband Charlie of Groveport, Ohio; brother, Robert M. Gannaway of Harrisburg, Pa., and grandchildren, Alison Kincer and husband William of Roanoke, Va., and Aidan Gannaway of Sterling.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, September 15, at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, Va., with Military Graveside Rites performed by the VA Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors and the VFW Post 1184 of Pulaski, Va.
