Dorsey Allene Evans was born to Wilson and Mary (Ferris) Evans April 25, 1925, in Oppy, Ky., on Long Branch in Martin County. Her father was a coalminer and her mother a one-room schoolteacher. She was the fourth of six children and the last in her family to pass away.
She died peacefully Dec. 30, 2013, cared for by her daughters Judith and Joyce in Beaverton, Ore., a suburb of Portland. She was 88 and suffering from dementia, kidney disease and peripheral neuropathy. She also lost her vision to macular degeneration in 2004 and with it went her ability to create lovely, handmade quilts and to read the newspapers and books she loved. But she remained pleasant and cooperative, with a good sense of humor, throughout her final years.
Always an excellent student, Dorsey graduated from Burch High School in Delbarton, W.Va., at the top of her class, in 1942. As part of the war effort, she worked at Air Force bases in Dayton and Columbus, Ohio, as a Rosie-the-Riveter. When the war ended, she completed a two-year elementary education degree at Pikeville College in Kentucky with honors; she later finished her bachelor's degree at Marshall University.
1947, she married Willis Dotson, who had spent the war as a U.S. Marine in the Pacific. Their first child, Judith Ellen, was born in 1948. Two more children, Joyce Lynn (1957) and David Randall (1958) completed the family.
Dorsey spent over 25 years as a school teacher in Kentucky (Freeburn and Phelps); Ohio (Reynoldsburg and Columbus); and Florida (Homestead). She was well-regarded by colleagues, parents, and students. A particular note she cherished read, "Dear Mrs. Dotson. Please don't promote me. I love you." She spoke of missing her students until the final days of her life.
When Dorsey retired from teaching, she helped Willis as he built and sold homes in Ohio, South Carolina, and Florida. Willis died in 1992 at their home in Levy County. Their son David passed away in 2010. Dorsey was also preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Hessie Toops of Columbus, Ohio and Patty Evans of Inez, Ky. and her brothers, Paul Evans of Inez, Robert Evans of Columbus and Tom Evans of Warfield, Ky.
In addition to her daughters, Judith Harris and Joyce Dotson, she is survived by her grandchildren, Guy Wilson Harris of Beaverton, Ore. and Anna Dotson Dahm of Everett, Wash.
Dorsey's ashes will be interred beside her beloved husband at Orange Hill Cemetery in Williston. A graveside service will be held for family and friends, who will be notified when final arrangements are set. Arrangements will be handled by Knauff Funeral Home in Williston.
In Dorsey's memory, perform an act of loving kindness for someone.
