Grace Patricia "Pat" Simonson
Known as Pat to most everyone and Patsy to her siblings, her most favored name was Mother to her children. Grace Patricia "Pat" Simonson passed peacefully on Thursday, October 31 in St. Helena.
Pat was born to Gertrude Merrill Larson and Carl Alfred Larson in Machias, Washington on October 22, 1918. She graduated from Willits High School in 1936.
During World War II
Pat worked in the shipyards in Richmond, California while raising her daughter, Pom. She was a welder and was affectionately called "Pat The Burner".
She returned to Willits after the war when Dr. Raymond Babcock offered to teach her X-Ray. She spent a long career as the X-Ray technician at Howard Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1976.
While always a busy and talented woman, she used her retirement to excel in quilting, cross-stitching, embroidery and crocheting. She leaves behind a legacy of gifts she made for family members that are cherished pieces. She was very active in Willits Business and Professional Women and also very dedicated to Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron several times with the Willits Chapter.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Robert "Bob" Simonson. They were married on her birthday. She is also survived by daughter Pom Cartwright and husband Percy of Willits, son Carl Simonson and wife Katie of Santa Rosa, daughter Lucy Simonson of Ukiah, and son Robert Simonson and wife Kathy of St. Louis, Missouri.
She is survived by three grandchildren, Rhonda Ladendorf and husband Barry of San Diego, Bruce Cartwright and wife Tammy of Willits, and Matt Simonson of St. Louis, Missouri. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Jenifer Evans and husband Jeff of Redwood Valley, and Evan Cartwright. One great-great-grandchild, Scarlett Evans also survives.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Charles Ciancio and wife Shirley of Eureka, Annette Pinon and husband Dan of Willits, Virginia Snider and husband Ron of Kelseyville, Don Hemphill and wife Nora of Sierra, sister-in-law Nikki Larson of Grass Valley, and numerous great-nephews and nieces.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Charles Merrill Larson, Charlotte Frost, Virginia Ciancio and Dorothy Hemphill.
The family is planning a private funeral and graveside service. A public memorial will be December 7, at 1 p.m. at the Willits Methodist Church.
