Velden Arthur Reyes passed away Sunday, July 22, 2012, at age 84, at his home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, after a brief illness.
Born on March 10, 1928, in Sebastopol to Arthur and Caroline Reyes, their eldest son, he grew up in Willits and graduated from Willits High School with honors. He attended San Jose State University majoring in music.
He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and received three medals. He lived in Willits, Ukiah and Santa Rosa, where he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service.
He was a gifted musician, composer and the leader of a popular jazz band that played for local events in the 1960s. As a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he directed and arranged choir music for Sabbath services and sang with the choir.
He is survived by a daughter, Julie Medeiros (Jeff); two sons, Christopher Reyes (Carin) and Gregory Blackard (Brenda); sons-in-law Bruce Burt, Art Horton and Frank Sidoti; grandchildren Jonathan Burt, Joelle Burt, Sarah Maloney, Eric Medeiros, Alexander Medeiros, Noah Reyes, Cassandra Reyes, Randi Jones, Lisa Blackard, Kenny Price and Jessica Blackard; four great-granddaughters: Geneva Maloney, Nevaeh Scott, Antoinette Medeiros and Carmizae Scaraglino; and sisters Ardis Walker of Willits and Iris Rogers of Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jenny Reyes; son, "Duffy" Powers; daughter, Carmen Sidoti; parents, Arthur and Caroline Reyes; and brothes Milton Reyes, Darrell Reyes and Lanny Reyes.
At his request there will be a private interment
