Peggy Jean "‘P9’" Nyhen(01/18/1838)

Peggy Jean Nyhen, 'P9'
Peggy passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at her home in Laytonville, surrounded by family and friends.
She was born to Mr. and Mrs. Farrell Nowlin in Clarks, Louisiana, on January 18, 1938, the youngest of four siblings. Her father found work in California, and the family moved and settled in Fort Bragg.
Peggy attended and graduated from Fort Bragg High School. She married her sweetheart, Jim Nyhen of Laytonville. As a young woman she worked for Pine Beach Motel in Fort Bragg and at her mother-in-law's cafe, also in Fort Bragg.
Peggy and Jim moved to Alaska, where Jim was stationed while serving in the U.S. Army. They later moved and made their home in Laytonville.
Peggy was employed by Suzy and Max Berchtold at the Chief Drive-In from 1978 to 1992. She was known for her happy nature, her smile and her work ethic.
Peggy prided herself on her ability to keep the Laytonville High School girls in line, as a mentor as well as a friend. She developed many deep relationships with those girls that continued throughout her life.
She is survived by brothers Lawrence, of Oregon, and Richard of Fort Bragg; a niece, Tammy Mitchell of Willits; a much-loved cousin, Joe Scott of Laytonville; and numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim Nyhen, and sister, Bertrice Mitchell.
Please join family and friends at a potluck memorial to celebrate the life of "P9" at the Long Valley Garden Club from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 30. Please bring pictures, stories and your favorite dish to share in remembering Peggy.
In-lieu of flowers, please contribute in Peggy's name to the Laytonville Volunteer Fire Department, 44950 Willis Ave., Laytonville, CA 95454.
We look forward to seeing many friends and family this Sunday to honor Peggy.
