Elizabeth P. Mercer, known to her friends as Betty, passed away peacefully in her Willits home on Monday, January 6, 2014. Born on August 24, 1913 in her parents' home in New York City, Betty grew up in Scarsdale, New York. She was a music major at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. In 1937 she married Stanley Mercer, chief buyer for J.C. Penney Company in New York City, and a riflery instructor in the Army during World War II. She gave birth in New York City to their only child Barbara, now a Home Health & Hospice RN in Willits and a Realtor with Realty World. Stanley passed away in 1960. Betty moved to California in 1995 to be closer to her daughter. In late August, 2013 her 100th birthday was celebrated in Willits and at Little River Inn on the coast, her favorite destination for birthdays and holidays. As she said several times in September, "How can you top these celebrations?"
Per her wishes, no service will be held.
