Samuel Turner Mote, 94 of Union City, Ind., died peacefully in his home of 91 years on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.
He was born to Henry and Bertha Mote, fifth of their eight children, in the family home at Springhill in Darke County, Ohio. Sam lived most of his life in Union City, Ind. He graduated from Wayne School in 1937, briefly attended Indiana University
, then enlisted in the Army
Air Corps in January 1942 and served until 1945. Sam was trained as a bomber mechanic in South Carolina and California and then served in North Africa, Corsica, Sicily and Italy. He was a Crew Chief and Master Sergeant in the 321st Squadron of the 57th Bomb Wing and received the bronze star
during his tenure. Following WW II, Sam began a long career in farming, founded Mote Farm Service and served on the board of directors for Union Trust Bank. During 74 years of membership at South Salem Church of Christ, he served as a deacon for several years. The VFW
and Elks Club in Union City were also organizations he enjoyed. Sam avidly enjoyed woodworking and became an accomplished and generous furniture maker, aided by his wife, Kathleen. He also spent a great deal of time traveling the country for Army reunions and sightseeing historical landmarks.? Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Kathleen Moberly Mote; his three daughters, Rebecca Vernon (Mark) of Stafford, Va., Janie Modica (Mike) of Ft. Wayne and Carrie Craig (Dale) of Muncie; six grandchildren, Abby Cruikshank, Travis Vernon, Sara McCue, Emily McCue, Samantha Brewer and Hannah Brewer; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Bailey of Piqua, Ohio; and two brothers: Henry Mote, Jr. and Stanley Mote, both of Union City.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at South Salem Church of Christ. Burial services will immediately follow at Springhill Cemetery. ? Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Oswalt Family Funeral Home, 1212 E 100S, Winchester.
