Sammy Joe Rawlins, 56, of Muncie, passed away Sunday afternoon, January 29, 2012, at Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.
He was born February 24, 1955 in Winchester to Harry and Wilma (Foreman) Rawlins. He was a 1973 graduate of Winchester Community High School. He had been a Chef having served many restaurants and eating establishments in the Denver, Colo., and Los Angeles, Calif., areas for more than 20 years, prior to his disability. Sammy enjoyed growing flowers and it was said he had a green thumb. He also liked birdwatching, sewing and quilt making. Rawlins had attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Winchester when he was able to go to church.
Survivors include his parents, Harry and Wilma Rawlins of Winchester; one brother, Harry Rawlins (wife-Judy) of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Tracy Carney (husband-Brad) of Middlebury; one niece, Natalie Carney of Middlebury; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.
A memorial service is 1 p.m. Saturday at Parson Mortuary, Muncie. A private committal service with cremated remains will take place at a later date.
