SMIT, Dirk
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dirk Smit, 95 years old, on April 13, 2014. He was married for 43 years to the late Thea Smit and long time, loving partner of Margaret Djokich. He was the proud father of Marjolein Hicks of Stratford and her late husband Jim (2011), and the late Reinie (1970). He was Opa to Dave Hicks and his wife Christa, (Muskoka), Mark Hicks and his wife, Tanya, (Ayr) and Amy Ollson and her husband Steve. (Stratford). Great Opa to Jenna and Julia Hicks, and Ewan, Liam, and Caden Ollson. Dirk will be dearly missed by Marge's family; Susan Blanchette and partner Jeff Fox, Beverly Hills, Mich, Barbara Baca of Toronto, and Connie Baca of Windsor, and Marge's granddaughters Kristina Blanchette and her ?ancée Jason MacDonald of Cottam, and Katie Michon of Windsor. Dirk is survived by his brothers Ger Smit and his wife Noor, (deceased) and Willy Smit and his wife Nora, as well as several nephews and one niece all in Holland. Dirk worked for Heinz in Leamington for 26 years, retiring in 1984. He was active in the Lion's Club and Arts at the Marina. He had a lifelong passion for photography, travel, gardening and classical music. He was an avid walker and enjoyed hiking, and watching tennis, soccer and curling. He had fond memories of sailing on his dear friend, Don Ross's boat. In later years, unable to do it himself, he relished hearing the travel tales of his friends, Tini and Dick Grolman. The family would like to thank Extendicare Southwood Lakes, especially the staff of the Essex wing for the excellent care and many acts of kindness shown to Dirk and Marge. If so desired, donations to the Alzheimer's Society, or the Parkinson's Society would be appreciated by the family. Visitation Wednesday from 3-5 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at
