MICHAEL MARCUZZI Obituary

Published by Windsor Star from Sep. 29 to Oct. 2, 2012.
MARCUZZI, Dr. Michael David
1966-2012
Born in Windsor, Ontario on September 23, 1966, after a lengthy battle with cancer, on September 27, 2012 at 46 years of age, Michael passed away. A passionate, humourous man with endless enthusiasm for, and a love of, music, learning, research, and a good conversation. Loving and cherished dad of Daniel, Sofia, and Danica, son of Colleen and the late Larry (2012), brother of Lisa and husband Av Maharaj, Leslie and husband David Boutet, Daniella and husband Kevin Brown, and the late Ryan Kathleen (1996), loving partner of Melissa Noventa, long-time friend of Bernardo Padron, and a cherished friend to so many others. Also he will be deeply missed by his many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Michael was a Professor of Music, as well as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, at York University. Prior to joining the full-time faculty at York University, Michael taught for ten years at the university and secondary school levels and in community settings in Windsor, Toronto and California. He was a graduate of F.J. Brennan high school, the University of Windsor (BMus), and York University (BEd and PhD). Michael was a performer, arranger, composer, ethnomusicologist and a teacher with vast experience in classical, jazz, Cuban, Latin, and popular music. He served as a graduate student advisor to many who describe him as a completely devoted and formative educator, brilliant, quick witted, and above all, generous with his time. A man of many hats, who fought the bigger battles to lessen the load of others. Michael joined the Regent Park School of Music (Toronto) in 2011 and its program flourished directly due to his countless volunteer hours and relentless spirit to ensure children had access to music education. He performed with symphony orchestras in Windsor, Detroit and Mississauga and as a freelance trumpeter with numerous artists in Canada, U.S. and Cuba. His credits as an arranger and composer include work with the Canadian Brass, University of Memphis Jazz Orchestra, and Toronto-based Latin ensembles Orquesta Fantasia and Pacande. He was a global authority on both Cuban popular music and Afro-Cuban sacred music, lecturing and publishing around the world. He collaborated in curating the Afro-Cuban exhibit of The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix, Arizona, and later became a valued consultant for their Latin American gallery. Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Princess Margaret Hospital, Beth Reid at the CCAC and all the wonderful help she put in place, and Dr. Gall and the Hospice staff for the gift of their time for Michael. If you so desire, donations to the charity of your choice or to Holy Name of Mary Food Fund, c/o Frank Chauvin, 892 St. Mary's Blvd, Windsor, ON, N8S 2T9 would be appreciated by the family. Very sad days to hear the news of friends of old passing way too early. My condolences and prayers to the family...Many great times as kids we had playing travel hockey and amazed at the talent Mike had with the left glove in net, no one scored on his left. My admiration for Mike was also in his trumpeting/piano playing and overall musical gifts. Lost touch so many years ago but never will be forgotten, one of the best I will ever have known...BAMMER #2(18), Riverside Rangers Defense, Mark Van Watteghem, Deanna D'Amore and family say goodbye...RIP

Heaven has another angel. I was fortunate to know Mike as a musician at the University of Windsor, and as a COR brother. He was the most caring, outgoing, and crazy person I ever knew. It figures he would go on to become such an important person- he always gave so much of himself, and always showed his unique love of music!! Condolences to the entire family.

Michael was my friend, colleague, and one of the brightest minds I have ever known. This is a deep loss not just for me and the University, but also the music community as a whole. I will truly miss him.

I had the distinct pleasure of studing Cuban Popular music with Michael in the early 90's at York. He was a brilliant musician, patient and thorough instructor and just a pleasure to be around. Our loss is heaven's gain. I can just picture him up there playing with Desi Arnaz... Rest well and pain free!

So Sorry to learn of Mike's passing. I had the great pleasure of having him as a room-mate when I moved to Toronto. I 1986. The house was filled with music, wonderful conversation and craziness. Little did I know what a powerful musical force he would become. I had the good fortune to play with and learn from him many times over the years. My condolences to his family. I am sure they know the impact he had on so many and his memory with certainly live on.

So sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of performing in bands with Michael when we were youths; particularly one of his brass quintets. He was an inspiring musician, and intellect, even at a young age. Condolences to Colleen, Lisa, Leslie, and the entire Marcuzzi family.

Condolences to all of Mike's family.

I was in awe of Mike's musical abilities back in our Brennan days. I remember beating myself up during a playing test and Mr. Jones trying to make me feel better when he said, "Not everyone can be a Mike Macuzzi". Truer words were never spoken.

Have not been in touch with Mike for years, but have very fond memories of his talent, his humour and his spirit. RIP old friend.

As you know we spent time at Met with my dad while your father was also ill.
I had no idea that you were about to go through it again.
My heart really does ache for you.
I pray that you find peace through all of this.

Micahel lived with us in Toronto when he came to study music. He was a wonderful young man and neighbours often wondered what CD was playing when Michael was practicing. My favourite times were after dinner, doing dishes. There was no end of things to talk about. Colleen and family, I am holding you in my heart, Love Louise

This is so sad! He was great as a euchre partner. He could deal himself 3 jacks at any time. I accompanied him at the U of Windsor. I rehearsed with him one day and he was in the same clothes for the recital the next. He hadn't gone to bed!! What a spirit! Much Much Much too young!!!
