BARNES WINSTON-SALEM Helen Elizabeth Bowman Barnes July 4, 1925 - May 27, 2012 Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Bowman Barnes died at the age of 86. She was born July 4, 1925 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Lillian Elizabeth Steelman Bowman and Joseph David Bowman. She graduated from John W. Hanes High School in Winston-Salem, NC. She was a civil service employee for the Army, Air Force and Navy in her early work years and then went on to work and retire from the Veterans Administration. She attended Northwest Baptist Church in her early years and then went on to become a faithful member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church where she was involved in many activities. She was a wonderful wife and a loving mother, always so kind and thoughtful. We will always remember her beauty and grace. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, William Boyd Barnes; son, William Marcus Barnes and wife Linda of Virginia Beach, VA; daughter, Lisa Barnes Cooper and her husband Philip of Walnut Cove, NC; five grandchildren, Josh Barnes and wife Chelsea, and Hunter Barnes of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jake, Sam and Hope Cooper of Walnut Cove, NC, and a sister, Betty Rierson, and a step-sister, Barbara Fox of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Friday, June 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the nave with interment afterward in the Louisa Bitting Dalton Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends after the service at the church in the Colhoun Room.
