Graham Denton Obituary

DENTON BLOWING ROCK Graham Williams Denton, Jr. January 8, 2013 Mr. Denton died at his home on January 8, 2013 after a courageous eight month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 67 years old. A native of Charlotte and Blowing Rock, NC, Graham was born to the late Castelloe Bland Dowling and Graham Williams Denton. He attended Myers Park High School and Wake Forest University, where he was a member of R.O.T.C. and the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He earned his M.B.A. from Georgia State University. After college, Graham served in the United States Army, stationed in Fort Lee, VA and Fort McPherson, GA before being deployed to Camp Page in South Korea during the Vietnam War. In 1971, Graham joined North Carolina National Bank (NCNB), which would eventually become Bank of America. He spent his entire 36 year career with the bank, in a variety of leadership roles in corporate and commercial banking. At the time of his retirement in 2007, he was the North Carolina and Charlotte Market President and the Market President Executive, leading a team of 135 Market Presidents across the United States. Graham treasured the many close friendships he developed during his time at the bank. Graham was actively involved in his community and served on or led numerous boards. He was a former Board Chairman of the North Carolina Chamber and The United Way of Central Carolinas. He was also a devoted alumnus of Wake Forest University. He served on the Board of Trustees and was chairman of the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Board of Directors. Graham also instilled a love for the school in his three children, who are all Wake Forest graduates. He created an athletic scholarship to honor his late father, who played football at Wake in the 1930s. The school honored Graham late last year by the naming of the Graham W. Denton, Jr. Commons in the WFU Charlotte Business Center. He was also given the Distinguished Alumni Award. In his retirement, Graham pursued his many passions. He was an avid collector of model trains, a childhood hobby that he never outgrew. He played golf whenever possible and rarely missed a Wake Forest or Carolina Panthers home football game. He was an endeared member of the Blowing Rock community which had become his primary residence in later years. He was a member of the Blowing Rock Country Club, Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church and served on the Board of Trustees of the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum. His friends and family will remember him as a joyful and lighthearted man, who loved to laugh and was always optimistic, even as he battled his disease. He was at his happiest when surrounded by his loving family and friends, and in a very unique way, he could find the fun in any situation. His enduring strength and spirit will never be forgotten. He is survived by his devoted wife of 28 years, Anne Fink Denton; daughter Mary Denton Lunsford and husband, Bill, daughter Elizabeth Denton Shah-Khan and husband Murtuza, and son Graham Williams Denton, III (Wills); grandchildren Liza, Will and Charlie Lunsford; sister Barbara Denton Biddix, nephew Charles Graham Biddix and wife, Maryanne and niece Bryn Biddix Miles and husband Mike. A service to celebrate Graham's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 11 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. A private burial will be held in Blowing Rock on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Anne and Graham Denton Cancer Research Endowment Fund, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, PO Box 571021, Winston-Salem, NC 27157; and to Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1218 Main Street, PO Box 393, Blowing Rock, NC 28605. I worked with Graham at Bank of America. He assisted in getting a major gift for the ECU Heart institute in Greenville. As he did many times, he saw a need and made a commitment to help others. I know he will be missed

Anne, I just learned of Graham's passing and am so sorry for you and all the immediate family who I know will miss him dearly. He clearly loved life and made those around him all the richer for it. He was one of my favorite people to work for and with at the bank. He was smart, energetic, and someone who everyone looked up to and admired. Please accept my sincere condolences at this very difficult time. God bless you and all members of your family.

I have fond memories of Graham. He was my brother's best friend. I had the pleasure of going with Graham, my brother and another friend to Nassau while in college. We stopped by to see Graham's father told Graham he had put 4 new tires on his car for a safer trip to Miami. We all had a wonderful time together. Graham was a consummate gentleman with a kind spirit. I was saddened to hear of his death.

Ann, I was real sorry to read about Graham as I was riding home after work. He lived 2 doors down from us on Hempstead Place while my brother, Walter and I were growing up and he and Walter would let me hang out with them sometimes. Graham let Walter borrow one of his 45 rpm records and I somehow got as hold of it and played it on Walter's Philco record player. It was "That'll Be The Day" by the Crickets on the Brunswick label. In this manner Graham influenced my tastes in music.
I also worked at NCNB back in 1973-74 with Graham and all the fine folks there. Graham was truly a gentleman and a scholar. I last saw Graham, your son and you about 10 years ago at Luisa' Pizza on Montford Drive. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

I am sorry to learn of Graham's passing. He and I lived 2 doors apartment when we were youngsters all the way through high school. We enjoyed many fun times together playing basketball in his driveway, listening to his 45 rpm records, and riding in his Mustang. I regret that I had lost contact with Graham since going our separate ways after high school. I always admired his good humor towards life.

Graham had a gracious and generous spirit--and a solid style of leadership. We will miss him!

January 10, 2013

I grew up across the street from Graham on Scotland Avenue and remember fondly all the days spent outside, playing in and along the creek, roller bat at night, having fun fooling around the home construction sites, playing barefoot all the time, being called home by our mothers yelling from the porch at dinner time. A kind of unorganized childhood that probably doesn't exist much any more. Only ran into Graham a few times since moving to the West Coast after grad school, but it was nice to see he was still the joyful, lighthearted man all have described. It was gratifying to read of all he achieved during his life. My thoughts go out to the family. Charlie Couric, Moraga, CA

I am so sad to learn of Graham's illness and passing. Another "NCNB alumni," I worked with Graham back in the day when he worked on the "loan platform" in the old Main Office of the bank. He was always the consumate professional, yet lots of fun with a great sense of humor also. My thoughts are with the family at this time; my deepest sympathies.

Anne, I am so sorry for your loss! I am so very lucky to have gotten to know Graham and you over the past 10 or so years and will always remember him as a positive, strong and caring man that touched so many people in his life. Some of the most simple sayings are so powerful and my favorite one is by Dr. Seuss " Don't cry because it's over, SMILE because IT happened" I'm always here for you and your family if you need anything.

I am so sad to hear of Graham's passing and the loss for his family. I had both the personal and professional pleasure of working with Graham at NCNB/NationsBank/BAC over a number of years. He always exemplified the best qualities of a leader with his wisdom and passion. But what remains with me most is that Grahm was always a consumate gentleman and so caring about the success of his people.
