Sue Runkle Obituary

RUNKLE RALEIGH - Sue Shelton Runkle, 85, a well-respected and innovative choral director who led the music program at Highland United Methodist Church from the mid-1960's until her retirement in the late 1980's, died Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Rex Hospital. Mrs. Runkle had battled cancer since a diagnosis last fall. Born May 18, 1925, in Winston-Salem, she received her bachelor of arts degree in Music Education from Guilford College. Preceding her in death were her husband, Benjamin Grove Runkle; and a son, Steven Whitten Runkle; her son, Ben Runkle, of Raleigh, survives. Also surviving are a nephew, David Gibson, of Walterboro, SC, and a niece, Kate Rice of Rio Linda, CA. Mrs. Runkle taught music in Forsyth County Schools and was choir director at Hanes Methodist Church in Winston-Salem in the 50's through early 60's. She taught kindergarten at Raleigh Pre-School in the mid 60's and was choir director and later Minister of Music at Highland United Methodist Church. She and her husband, Ben founded the Carolina Antique Mall, the first of its kind in the area, around 1990 at the Glenwood Village Shopping Center and later moved to the space at Cameron Village, now occupied by the Junior League Bargain Box. In addition to being a loving wife and mother who encouraged her talented sons' participation in music, Mrs. Runkle touched many lives with her greatest passion, teaching voice. She specialized in young singers, but in some cases mentored students for many years, giving her last lessons three weeks before she died of complications of lung cancer. Family visitation will be at Brown Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's St. from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. A Service will be held at Highland Methodist Church on Ridge Rd, at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. Condolences may be sent to www.brownwynne.com.

Reading these comments has shown me what a great motivator Sue Runkle was to so many people through the years. No wonder Ben and Steve accomplished so much in music! Her talent and vivacious spirit will continue to make the world a better place thanks to the gifts she has passed on to students, friends and family. My thoughts are with you, Ben, and all your and Sue's loved ones.

Ben, with genuine respect and affection I remember your mother Sue as a friend and neighbor. Actually, she wrote to me when Tom died in 2004 reminding me that it was an interview with me in 1962 by your father that you came to live in Glen Forest. He liked the area and told her about the location. Sue was a beautiful person in all ways and I know that music, that universal language, made her dear to so many as she shared her talent. I always liked knowing your family was just down Tanglewood Drive from me. Barbara Parramore

I was fortunate to have had Mrs. Runkle as my voice teacher during high school in the early 80's. I will always cherish my memories of her and the encouragement she gave me to use my voice. She was a wonderful teacher who I admired and for whom I am grateful to have known. My prayers are with her family and loved ones.

I am so sorry Ben.. I mean that from the bottom of my heart! I had a long conversation with your mom 3 weeks ago and promised her that I would come have a long talk with her again soon... The Lord beat me to it! You know her, your brother, your dad, and mine (and everyone else) are up there looking out for us! God Bless..........

I grew up in Raleigh, and attended Highland throughout my childhood and young adult years. Mrs. Runkle encouraged me as a young violinist, providing me with many opportunities to perform at Highland. To this day, my favorite benediction is the Irish Blessing which was sung so beautifully by the chancel choir at the close of many worship services in the 1970's, under Sue's capable direction. We were all blessed by her caring spirit, and beautiful music.

Our Heavenly Father knows that losing a loved one to death causes us great pain. Your tears are not unnoticed. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot." Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Ben, I was so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. Although I did not know her well, her love for music is so evident in you (and was in Steve). I got a kick out of seeing her watch you play at the bbq restaurant a couple of years ago. You have my deepest sympathy.

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Runkle's passing. I met her one evening when she was accompanying her son, Ben, to one of his musical performances and found her to be an engaging conversationalist, quick with a laugh and a smile and very interested in others' ideas and lives. She was a lovely lady.LaNelle Davis

I was fortunate and honored to be one of Sue's "adult" voice students. We shared many happy moments at Highland and in our homes. I will miss her. May God bless and comfort her son, Ben and other family members.

They were wonderful neighbors to grow up next to. Many days I would come up the driveway from the school bus and hear voice lessons going on. She was always loving and kind and I will always have wonderful memories of the Runkles.
