My sister Linda Guild Lake has already written about our parents' close connection to Carlton and Miriam when they served as pastor and friend at First Baptist Church in Ridgefield Park NJ. I kept in touch with Carlton through annual Christmas greetings until very recent years. Carlton lived a long and well-lived life in church and academia. I am thankful for his care and concern for our parents and particularly for our mother after our father died.

Linda Lake (see below) is my sister, and I say amen to her message. Although I was already in college during Carlton's ministry at our church, I did meet and know the Mitchells. They were a blessing to our family.

Carlton was the minister of the First Baptist Church in Ridgefield Park, NJ where my family attended. He and Miriam were also close friends of my parents, Ralph and Florence Guild. I sometimes baby sat for Grace, Betty, and John. Grace, I think you inherited my beloved green bike when I no longer needed it. I know Carlton was patient because he put up with our teen-aged silliness in youth group. Until a few years ago, he always wrote a personal note on his Christmas letter. I so enjoyed hearing from him and remembering the good times in RP.
His family is in my thoughts and prayers. Carlton was a very special person.

Carlton was one of the finest gentlemen I have had the privilege to meet. His abiding faith was matched only by his scholarly passion. I am honored to have known him. He and Miriam will always be deeply missed.

Dr. Mitchell was a dear family friend and a special mentor to me in my undergraduate career at Wake Forest. As a matter of fact, his influence is the very reason I chose to attend Wake. As a senior in HS, he sat me down in his office and told me I could go to Gardner-Webb or Chapel Hill and have a great career, or I could go to Wake Forest and be challenged. He looked at me and said, "Now what will it be?" and then he picked up the phone and called the admissions office to tell them I was coming to Wake! I still chuckle at that conversation. I will always remember his wisdom and kindness as a mentor to me. He and my mother were friends from serving together on the NC Baptist State Higher Education Council and I hope that they are reminiscing now in eternity. My condolences to the family and know that many people were touched positively by your father's life. Peace to you all.

As a religion major, I especially loved Dr. Mitchell's American Religious Life course. That course content was particularly helpful as I had the honor, as did Dr. Mitchell, to serve as a U.S. Navy Chaplain. I salute his legacy and lift prayers for the comfort and strengthening of his family. God bless you real good!

Dr. Mitchell was a favorite professor of mine who encouraged me to explore my own faith while learning about others. I'm so grateful our paths crossed at Wake Forest University. Dr. Mitchell was a wonderful influence.

Dr. Mitchell was my faculty advisor at Wake. I think I took every class he taught. Warm and approachable, he wrote letters of recomendation for me when I applied to graduate schools. I kept up with him when I was a Baptist minister, and he seemed genuinely interested in my career. I smile when I remember him and his influence on my life.

Dr. Mitchell was one of the best teachers I ever had! He made the Old Testament come alive. I couldn't wait to go to his classes at WFU. He made an indelible impression on me and thousands of people he taught and mentored. Thank you Dr. Mitchell for a life filled with service and love.
