Richard C. "Dick" Gruber, age 83, of 2220 Lake Avenue, Wisconsin Rapids, WI died Sunday, October 27, 2013 at his residence.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM Friday, November 1, 2013 at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. Rev. Jim Altman will officiate. Visitation will take place at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday and Friday at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. There will be a Parish Rosary at the Church at 7:30 PM Thursday. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post #9 of Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
(Please Note: The visitation for both Thursday night and Friday morning will be held at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church.)
Dick was born May 7, 1930 in Vesper, WI to John and Mary (Streng) Gruber. He married Viola A. Duckworth on February 27, 1954 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Plainfield, WI. Dick was employed at Preway Inc. for 41 years from 1946 until its closing in 1987. He then was employed at Consolidated Papers Inc. for the next 7 years when he retired in 1994.
Dick served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War
from September 11, 1951 until August 8, 1953. He was awarded a Bronze Star
during that period. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #1558 of Wisconsin Rapids and the Wisconsin Rapids Serra Club. Dick enjoyed hunting, football, baseball, building (construction), cutting firewood, sawing lumber and tractors.
Dick is survived by his wife, Viola; five children, Lynda (Wes) Suskey of LaCrosse, WI, Richard (Jody) Gruber of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Robert (Lisa) Gruber of Papillion, NB, Douglas (Jan) Gruber of Union, KY and James (Laurie) Gruber of Hammond, WI; six grandchildren, Breanna (Tyler) Peyton of Wauwatosa, WI, Jacob Suskey of LaCrosse, WI, Ryan Gruber of Springview, NE, Cole Gruber of Papillion, NB, Samuel Gruber of Union, KY and Maxwell Gruber of Union, KY; and one great granddaughter, Charlotte Peyton of Wauwatosa, WI.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, mother and father in law, brothers, John Gruber and Robert Gruber, sisters, Amanda Kemp and Mary Nendza, sisters in law, Gertrude Gruber and Katherine Gruber and brothers in law, Steven Kemp and Andrew Nenzda.
