William (Bill) J. Benz, age 91, of 154 Crestview Lane, Nekoosa died Saturday January 19, 2013 at Strawberry Lane Medical Rehabilitation Center in Wisconsin Rapids where he had been a resident since September 18, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday January 23, 2013 at the Feldner/Ritchay Funeral Home in Nekoosa. Rev. Bill Beaton will officiate.Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Nekoosa. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday January 23, 2013 from 11:30 to the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to the Nekoosa Ambulance Service. Bill was born August 10, 1921 in Nekoosa, to John and Zita (Ryan) Benz. He graduated from Alexander High School in 1939. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard
on July 22, 1942 and served aboard one of Uncle Sam's sub chasers along the East Coast and in the Atlantic Ocean. He earned the American Theater and Victory Ribbon and the Good Conduct medal. Bill was released from the Coast Guard on October 16, 1945. He married Laura Michalsen on July 20, 1944.
Bill was employed by the Nekoosa Edwards Paper Company, starting out as a roll plugger, working his way up to Tour Supervisor for Georgia Pacific until he retired in 1983. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and woodworking in his spare time.
He is survived by his son Mike (Darcey) of Hustler, Wisconsin; 2 grandchildren Greg (Kristin) of Waunakee and Lacey of Fall River and special friend Marie Weber of Nekoosa.
He was preceded in death by his wife Laura in 1986.
