A dearly and deeply loved man, David Lee Van Wormer, age 78, of Wisconsin Rapids, died Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield after a lengthy illness.
Graveside services are 12:00 Noon Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the Babcock Cemetery, Babcock, WI. The family will greet relatives and friends at Ritchay Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids, WI on Saturday from 9:00-11:30 AM.
David was born August 28, 1934 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI to Dorothy and Richard Van Wormer. He was raised by Dorothy and her second husband, Les Heath. David married Patricia Terhune on April 5, 1958.
David retired from the Navy as a third-class quartermaster on the submarine USS Tunney after four years. He graduated from UW-Stevens Point. He was in the National Guard for 20 years. David was employed by WDLB in Marshfield, WI, WKWF in Key West, FL, WLOF-TV in Orlando, FL, WFHR in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, the Wisconsin Rapids Twins, The Sporting News in St. Louis, MO, was a Game Warden for the DNR and retired in 1995 from the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune where he was the Sports Editor.
Dave was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Stan Plis Society, Sports Editors Association, Ringnecks of Kellner, South WI River Yacht Club, American Legion, National Wildlife Federation and Wisconservation. David loved sports, particularly the Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, especially deer hunting with his buddies, and fishing.
David loved his wife of 54 years, Patsy and his three children. They enjoyed all their years together, spending a lot of time fishing, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. His grandchildren always brought a gleam to his eye.
Dave was a great man, who will be missed by his family, but also his many loyal friends throughout his lifetime. He had a sense of humor like none other and had a brilliant mind that the family loved to pick for information, since he soaked up news and sports news like a sponge.
Dave is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Van Wormer; his three children, Valerie Hoelscher of Temple, TX, Jay Van Wormer of Joplin, MO and Vicki Schmeling of Wisconsin Rapids, WI; eight grandchildren, Layton, Landon, Logan and Layna Hoelscher, Andrew, Collin and Jordan Van Wormer and Joey and Evan Schmeling; 1 great grandchild, Jade Van Wormer; 3 sisters, Janet (Tony) Garski, Marianne (Gene) Timm and Susan (Dennis) Kromenaker.
Dave was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Heath, father, Richard Van Wormer, stepfather, Les Heath and sister, Jeannie Crueger.
