Donald Nicholas Mathews, age 83 of Gresham, passed away Wednesday, November 07, 2012 the St. Claire's Ministry Hospital in Weston. Born on August 6, 1929 in Wisconsin Rapids, he was the son of the late Frank W. and Mary G. (Gross) Mathews. After graduating from high school, Don enlisted with the United States Air Force and served his country proudly for 20 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1972. After his retirement Don moved to the Gresham area and had called it home ever since. Don was a member of the St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham where he was active with the church council. He was also an active member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Retired Air Force Association, the Air Force Sergeant Regime and was member and past commander of the Gresham American Legion Post #390. In his free time, Don enjoyed golfing, wood working, walking, winter skiing, bowling, and umpiring local baseball games.
Donald is survived by: 2 brothers, John and Maurice Mathews both of Wisconsin Rapids; nieces and nephews; special friends, Sandy and Wayne Buettner; and numerous other friends.
Donald was preceded in death by: his parents; a sister, Mary Helen Isaac; 4 brothers, Frank, George, William and Thomas Mathews; special friend, Eunice Schilling; and his Golden Retrievers, Brewster and Sparkle.
Funeral services will be held at11:00am on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church in Gresham with the Rev. David Barrett officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Gresham American Legion Post #390 at the church following the service. Entombment will be in the Allouez Catholic Mausoleum on Monday. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday after 9:00am until the time of the service. Swedberg Funeral Home in Gresham is assisting the family with the arrangements.
