Athnos, Gregory L.

Gregory L. Athnos, age 61, of Wisconsin Rapids, died Sunday, July 20, 2014 at Ministry St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield.

Funeral services were held at 7:30 PM (yesterday) Tuesday at Feldner/Ritchay Funeral Home in Nekoosa. Chaplain Dennis Fahey officiated. Online condolences may be expressed at ritchayfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be designated to the South Wood County Humane Society.

Greg was born March 26, 1953 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Donald Athnos and Ardyce (Steinke) Johnson at Ellsworth Air Force Base. He married Nancy Seif on September 25, 1976 in Wisconsin Rapids. Greg was employed in the Super Calender Dept. and as a wet lab technician for 15 years at Consolidated Papers (New Page), Biron Division. In earlier years, he was employed by Schill Heating and Air Conditioning in Nekoosa and by Guelzow Heating and Air Conditioning in Wisconsin Rapids.

Greg's broad range of interests and knack for fixing the unfixable allowed him to help his neighbors and friends in a variety of ways. His interests included flying, motorcycling, canoeing, and sailing. Greg was also a member and past president of the Antler Archers Archery Club.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; two children, Nikki (Craig) Riske of Billings, MT and Donald (April Ross) Athnos of Boulder, CO; and four brothers, Randy (Dow) Athnos of Lawton, OK, Mark (Lu) Athnos of Fletcher, NC, James (Pat) Johnson of Loveland, CO, and Joseph (Bobbi) Johnson of Woodbury, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, Dwaine Johnson, and his grandparents, Louis and Edna Athnos and Edward and Emma Steinke.
