Alberta (Griffis) Konieczki, age 89, of Stevens Point, passed away November 3, 2012 at St. Michael's Hospital.
Alberta was born on November 16, 1922 to the late John & Gertrude (Preston) Griffis in Olden, Missouri. She lived in various states before settling in Port Edwards, Wisconsin and later moved to Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Alberta attended the Merrillan schools and graduated high school in 1940. Right after graduating she received the "Good Citizenship Award" from the Daughters of American Revolution and represented Wisconsin on a trip to Washington D.C. She continued her education by attending Wood County Teacher's College in Wisconsin Rapids and then the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Alberta earned a degree in teaching and later became employed as an elementary school teacher in Hatfield, Cranmoor, and the Nekoosa school district. She was the recipient of the first "Teacher of the Year Award" presented by the Nekoosa school board.
Alberta married Roger Konieczki on July 3, 1943, in Waupaca, Wisconsin and then moved to Port Edwards.
Alberta will be remembered for her love of learning, teaching others, and growing spectacular sunflowers. Her faith was important to her, and she belonged to the United Methodist Church and the Retired Teachers Association. In her spare time, Alberta enjoyed gardening, reading, arts and crafts, and traveling to various places including: China, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, Alaska, Israel, Jordan, and South America. For more than a decade during her early retirement Alberta volunteered and taught prisoners at the Stevens Point jail how to read.
Survivors include her children, Linda (Harold) Koletsky of Palos Verdes Estates, California, William (Cheryl) Konieczki of Stevens Point, and Karen (Mark) Pasano of Northridge, California. She is also survived by grandchildren, Scott (Jana) Swift and Anna Pasano, and great grandchild, Braden Swift. She is also survived by sister-in-law Lillian Conway of Marcio Island, Florida and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Violet Knutson.
A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, November 24, 2012 at St Paul's United Methodist Church with Rev. Howard Hintzman officiating. A visitation and time of sharing memories will be held on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Boston Funeral Home, and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Merrillan, Wisconsin.
