John Henry Powell, 66, a lifelong resident of Martinsville, Ohio passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014. His wife of 44 years, Monica Harvey Powell, survives.
Mr. Powell was born on Sept. 1, 1947 in Wilmington, a son of the late Floyd and Mary Jane Gibson Powell. He attended Martinsville School until consolidation with Wilmington. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1965.
Mr. Powell worked for 40 years for various International Harvester dealerships in Wilmington. He retired from The Equipment Superstore in 2013. He was a police officer and the Chief of Police for the Village of Martinsville for more than 35 years.
John was a board member of the Clinton County Radio Club. He was a member of ARRL and the Clinton County Farmers and Sportsmen's Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent hours playing online solitaire. He loved NASCAR, baseball and football.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Powell is survived by two daughters, Tracy (Robert) Martin of Wilmington, and Billie Powell of Wilmington; two grandchildren, Sidney (Eric) Zorn of Wilmington, and Nathan Powell of Wilmington; two sisters, Jean Singleton of Wilmington, and Jane (Lloyd) Walker of Jacksonville, Fla.; and special friends, Michael Boyle and Charles Schumacher.
In addition to his parents, a brother, Sam Powell, a brother-in-law, Carl Singleton, and his mother-in-law, Florence Harvey, are preceded in death.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South St. in Wilmington. The burial will be in the Miami Cemetery, Waynesville, Ohio.
