Raphael E. Johnson, 80, of Wilmington, died 9:03 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born on April 16, 1933, in Fayetteville, to the late W. Henry and Elizabeth Myers Johnson. On Nov. 5, 1955, he married the former June R. Carvel, who survives.

Also surviving are children, Jennifer Johnson of Lebanon and James Edward (Lynette) Johnson of London; grandchildren, Zubair (Lori) Bujazia, Anissa Bujazia and Zack Bujazia; great-grandchildren, Adriana and Reese Bujazia; sisters, Anita Rand of Lynchburg and Jeanette Johnson of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, Roger and Maurice Johnson; and sisters, Eleanor Chaney and Sister Carmen Johnson.

Raphael retired from the U.S. Air Force as Chief Master Sergeant. He served in the Korean War and was affiliated with the 906th, 907th and 302nd Squadron Troop Carrier Wings. He was stationed at Clinton County Air Force Base and Rickenbacker Air Force Base. He was supervisor of Aircraft Maintenance Squadrons.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 in St. Peter Church with Celebrant Jeff Rimelspach. The burial will follow in the Grandview Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard.

Friends may call at the Ware Funeral Home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
