Robert Joseph Dettwiller, 68, of Hampton, Va., died on April 27, 2014, after a courageously fought battle with lung cancer.
Bob was born on April 8, 1946 in McDermott. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1964. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a loadmaster, was stationed at Langley Air Force Base and served a tour in Vietnam.
Bob worked at Irwin Auger Bit and as a Construction Project Superintendent at Branscome Inc. for 37 years.
Bob was a talented storyteller and greatly enjoyed making everyone around him laugh. He loved the outdoors, whether it was on the water fishing or watching the birds he fed in his backyard. When he was indoors, he could be found watching an old Western movie or cooking.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Cynthia Dettwiller; and two children, Eric Dettwiller of Hampton and Amber Dunn of New Port Richey, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Bob is the first-born son of Emma and Joseph Dettwiller of McDermott. His father is deceased but he is survived by his mother Emma Dettwiller; two brothers, Daniel Dettwiller of Wilmington, Ohio and Donald Dettwiller of McDermott; and his sister, Becky Dettwiller of Piketon.
Bob touched many lives and will be greatly missed.
He was buried on May 5 at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Va.
A Holy Mass Memorial Service will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Otway on Sunday, May 18 at 1 p.m. Following the service, family and friends are invited to a remembrance gathering at the Holy Trinity Hall on Pond Creek at 2:30 p.m.
