H. Robert Beal of Wilmington, formerly of the Port William community, passed away Monday, Nov. 25, 2013 at Wilmington Nursing & Rehabilitation Residence after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Robert was born May 1928 in Greene County, Ohio, a son of the late Harold and Eva Bingaman Beal.

He was a graduate of Port William High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Knisley, on Feb. 14, 1948. Mary passed away in 1988.

His chosen career was to be a farmer, and he devoted his life's work to the business of agriculture. He and Mary were the owner and operators of Beal Stock Farms along with a grain operation on their family farm.

Robert was a charter member and past president of the Port William Lion's Club, a lifelong member of the Elk's Lodge 747, a former 4-H advisor for the Port William Challengers, and an independent Dekalb seed dealer. Robert was retired from Airborne Express.

Robert was an avid golfer and always enjoyed golfing with his Elks buddies. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a man who was quick to laugh and eager to lend a hand to a friend in need. Robert enjoyed traveling with Mary, but his greatest pleasure later in life was sitting on the front porch of their family home where they raised their children and watched their grandchildren play, waiting for the day they would be together again.

Robert is survived by a son, Craig (Leslie) Beal of Jamestown; a daughter, Cheryl (Wayne Wharton) Roberts of Grove City; a brother, Kenny (Rosey) Beal of Wilmington; four grandchildren, Ashley Beal (Rick) Fenner of The Woodlands, Texas, Cynthia Roberts (Chris) Whitaker of Baltimore, Md., Katie Beal (Mike) Schiff of Jamestown and Chad (Dana) Roberts of Indianapolis, Ind.; five great-grandchildren, Andrew Fenner, Lauren Fenner, Rachel Fenner, Craig Schiff and Elizabeth Schiff; a nephew, Keith Beal of Cincinnati; and a niece, Jennifer Beal of Wilmington. Robert was fortunate to have lifelong friends in the "Boys of Port William."

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South St., Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Community Care Hospice, P.O. Box 123, Wilmington, OH 45177.
