Wendell R. Mahanes, 78, passed away 8:37 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017 at Clinton Memorial Hospital. His wife, Catherine W. Howard Mahanes, survives. They were married on Dec. 24, 1956 and had just celebrated their 60th anniversary.
He was born on Aug. 5, 1938, a son of the late Walter Lee "Pug" Mahanes and Fredia Mae Waits Mahanes. He was a 1956 graduate of New Vienna High School.
Mr. Mahanes was the long-time owner of We-Ma Construction Company. Wendell was an active member of the Bible Baptist Church of Wilmington. He was a gospel singer and had been in the Messenger Quartet. He had also been highly active in youth activities.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Mahanes is survived by three daughters, Tina Mahanes (Bruce) Stewart of Wilmington, Melodee Lee Mahanes Hilderbrant of Wilmington, and Jerri Mahanes (Allen) Stanforth of Clarksville; a sister, Dianna Sue Harman of Hillsboro; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, three brothers, Ricky Lynn Mahanes, Norman Mahanes and William Mahanes, are preceded in death.
The funeral service will be noon Monday, Jan. 9 at the Bible Baptist Church of Wilmington, 55 Megan Drive, Wilmington. The burial will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Jan. 9 at the church.
