Russell L. Conger, 83, of Wilmington died 1:50 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at Wilmington Nursing & Rehabilitation.
His wife, Alva Conger, preceded him in death in 1997. They were married June 7, 1958.
Mr. Conger was born March 25, 1930 in Greene County, a son of the late Lindley and Elsie Whittington Conger. He was a 1949 graduate of Kingman High School and served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Conger retired from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in 1982 after 32 years of service. He was active with the Boy Scouts for many years. He was an avid stamp collector and fisherman. He also enjoyed collecting coins. He liked watching all sports, but was a passionate Reds and Bengals fan. Most importantly, Mr. Conger loved spending time with his kids and grandkids.
Mr. Conger is survived by two sons, Robert Conger of Wilmington and David (Wilma) Conger of Wilmington; a daughter, Susie (Keith) Brooks of Wilmington; a sister, Betty Kay Dove of Berrysville; a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Barbara (Nolan) Wright and Orville Williams; four grandchildren, Kenneth Conger, Rachel Conger, Gracie Conger, and Adrien Brooks; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, a brother, Roger Conger, and a sister, Wanda Williams, are preceded in death.
Funeral services will be noon Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home, 327 N. South St., Wilmington, with Pastor Andy Doherty officiating. Burial will be in New Antioch Cemetery with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 49 Memorial Squad. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 1, at the Reynolds-Smith Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Community Care Hospice, P.O. Box 123, Wilmington.
