Gene Rice

Gene Rice, 92, of Wilmington, and formerly of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Clinton Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 9, 1921 in Booneville, Ky., to the late Chester and Esther Rice.

Gene was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the Philippines and southeast, and received Purple Hearts and Bronze Stars for his service.

In February 2012, he received a certificate declaring him a Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Beshear of Kentucky.

He retired from GM in 1981 after 30 years of service. A member of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Waynesville, he also enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta, in 2003; one son, Keith Rice; two grandchildren; his parents, Chester and Esther Rice; and three brothers, Robert, Elwood, and Carl Rice.

He is survived by seven sons, Dellus (Vicki) Rice, David (Tina) Rice, Darrell Rice (Pat Bishop), Dorman (Brenda) Rice, Marcus (Susie) Rice, Dwayne Rice, and Phillip (Vanessa) Rice; three daughters, Joyce (Kenny) Naylor, Phyllis Smith (Ron Thompson), and Deanna Rice (Joe Monnin); daughter-in-law, Beth Rice; 31 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Delbert and Earl Rice; two sisters, Eudella (Ralph) Neeley and Velma Roberts; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26 at Full Gospel Tabernacle, 8551 Ferry Road, Waynesville, with Jim Brown officiating. Burial will be at Miami Cemetery, Corwin. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Stubbs-Conner Funeral Home, Waynesville, is serving the family.
