Marcheta ("Cheta") Lou Gilchrist Huerter, wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and friend passed away from this life on September 16, 2013, in Conroe, Texas, at the age of 71.
Cheta, the daughter of Roberta Roark Gilchrist and T.A. Gilchrist, was born on March 25, 1942, in Ryan, Oklahoma (the same birthplace of Chuck Norris). Cheta attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, Oklahoma, and then began her teaching career in Topeka, Kansas, in 1963. Cheta married Larry Huerter on May 16, 1964. They moved from Topeka, to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1970 before coming to Texas in 1975. In Texas, Cheta taught in the public schools from 1976 to 2008 and also taught at Lone Star Community College from 1995 to 2013. By the early 1990s, Cheta had obtained a Master's Degree in English and a Master's Degree in Education from Sam Houston State University. During the almost 50 years of teaching, Cheta touched and impacted the lives of many of her students.
Besides devoting her life to teaching, Cheta had many interests. Cheta was known by all family and friends as a true dog lover. She took great enjoyment in breeding and raising German Shorthaired Pointers for both hunting and show. Cheta also loved to sing. She was a member of the Port of Harmony, Sweet Adelines. Her beautiful voice was always heard in church as well as during any musical play or movie she was watching. Other interests included her passion for stories, whether through literature or her own genealogy research (as well as the many crime/legal related television dramas that kept her interest). Cheta will be lovingly and fondly remembered by her family and friends alike as one of the kindest, giving, and smartest persons known.
Cheta's survivors include: her husband of 49 years, Larry Huerter, of Conroe, Texas; her son, Scott Andrew Huerter (wife Janin and children Brock, Colby, and Dayne), of Katy, Texas; her son, Colonel Michail Sean Huerter (children Zachary and Quincey), of Fort Benning, Georgia; her daughter, Kristi Michelle Herring (husband Chris and children Tristan and Skylar), of The Woodlands, Texas; her uncle, Gordon Gilchrist (wife Georgia) of Fort Payne, Alabama; her brother, Mike Gilchrist (wife Connie) of Ryan, Oklahoma; her sister in law, Sue McGrath of San Diego, California; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will welcome friends at a visitation on Sunday, September 22, 2013, from 5:00 to 8:00 with a Rosary service from 7:00 to 8:00 in the Memorial Chapel at Metcalf Funeral Home, Hwy 105 at 1801 E.
