Dr. Jean A. Picard Obituary
NORTH SMITHFIELD - Dr. Jean A. Picard, 87, of Pound Hill Rd., died August 30, 2016 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Louise (Beauchemin) Picard whom he married August 30, 1952. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Armand and Georgine (Valois) Picard.
Dr. Picard did his undergraduate work at Assumption College and earned his Doctorate at the University of Montreal Dental School. A fine student, he also excelled in sports. He was elected to the Assumption College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1968. He captained the Greyhounds in both baseball and basketball in 1947 & 1948. He later played in the Montreal Basketball League and coached the University of Montreal team.
After serving 2 years in the Navy Dental Corp, he practiced dentistry at the family office on Hamlet Ave., in Woonsocket for 41 years, retiring in 1996. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Rhode Island and Woonsocket Dental Societies.
For 25 years, he volunteered at the clinic at Mt. St. Mary's Abbey. He served on the Woonsocket Catholic Regional School Board for 14 years, 4 of them as president. He was also the President of Fair North Little League for 4 years. He enjoyed golf and was a member & president of the former Winnesuket Country Club.
He also found time to be an active member in Franco-American circles, a charter member of Club Richelieu, and also belonged to the Club Marquette, as well as Club Aram Pothier.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, Lise Laquerre and her husband Raymond of Homosassa Springs, FL, Suzanne Mulroy and her husband John of Wakefield, RI, Eric Picard and his wife Pamela of Ridgefield, CT and Nicole Picard and her husband Patrick Murray of Santa Monica, CA, a sister, Constance Benoit of Wakefield, RI and eight grandchildren, Richard and Stephen Laquerre, Katherine and Michael Mulroy, Justin and Lucie Picard and Nicholas and Matthew Zarchen. He was the brother of the late Dr. George Picard, Henri Picard and Yolande St. Germaine.
His funeral will be held Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 9 AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 1409 Park Ave., Woonsocket. Burial will follow in Precious Blood Cemetery, Rathbun St., Woonsocket. Calling hours are Friday from 5:30 - 8:30 PM.
