THOMAS, Jerry* (The Palm Beach Post)
THOMAS, Jerry Jerry Thomas, a longtime Delray Beach business owner, best known as the owner and operator of Delray Citgo, died Sunday December 14, 2014 after a long illness. He was 79. Mr. Thomas was born in Frenchburg, Kentucky in 1935 and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Point Defiance from 1952 to 1956. Following his time in the service, Mr. Thomas owned service stations in Dayton, Ohio and Marietta, Georgia and retired to Florida in 1981. He realized he wasn't ready for retirement, so in 1982 he purchased the Exxon service station on Northeast Fourth Street and U.S. Highway 1, which eventually became Delray Citgo. It was family run until 2000. Dad did everything with a sense of pride and was the hardest working person we ever knew. Even when he was ill, he could still work circles around the strongest of men. Delray Citgo was his pride and joy. He took that corner property and turned it into a showplace. Not many service stations got beautification awards from the City. He displayed them proudly. The local business trucks would line up daily to fill up for their workday. Often there would be a line to get gas there and he worked hard to keep that line moving efficiently. He was also a trusted mechanic to businesses and residents near and far. He had high standards for everyone around him and, as a close friend and former employee stated, "He would never ask you to do anything he wouldn't do himself." He had this tough exterior that protected the most gentle of hearts imaginable. He was truly a self-made man. People were drawn to him wherever he went. No one around him ever wanted for anything--ever. The greatest pride of our lives is being the daughter and son of Jerry Thomas who fiercely loved, guided and protected us - Kim and Greg. Jerry was able to give his daughter away in marriage the day after Thanksgiving to Fran, two weeks before his death. Jerry leaves behind: Kim Thomas Marincola daughter; Greg Thomas son; Aaron Hallyburton and wife Melinda Hallyburton; grandson; Chasmin Hallyburton granddaughter; Cynthia Thomas granddaughter; Aaron Michael Hallyburton great-grandson; Bryan Gerald Hallyburton great- grandson; Jeanette Parrott beloved mother of his children; Fran Marincola son-in-law; brothers and sisters: William Thomas, Barbara Weisenberger, Ellen Tindell, Karen Medford, Richard Blair.
