ANDREW STEPHENS LANIER, MD FLOYD-Andrew (Andy) Stephens Lanier, 89, passed away unexpectedly Friday, September 17, 2010 at Carillion Memorial Hospital in Roanoke. He was surrounded by his loving family. Dr. Lanier was born in Greensboro, N.C. the third son of the Rev. Raymond R. and Myrtle Stephens Lanier. He grew up on Virginia's Eastern Shore, graduated from Fork Union Military Academy, and did his undergraduate work at Washington and Lee University. He received his medical degree from Washington University Medical School in St Louis, MO. After serving with the U.S. Public Health Service from 1946 to 1950, he began his private medical practice in Fulton, Mo. He moved to Kewaunee, WI where he practiced general medicine and surgery for twenty-three years. In 1973, he returned to Virginia and bought a small farm in Floyd County. He joined the Emergency Room Physician group at Community Hospital of the Roanoke Valley. In November 1985 he retired but resumed seeing patients with the New River Public Health District from 1988 - 1992. He is survived by: his wife of 38 years, Marybeth Christy Lanier; son, Richard F Lanier and wife Lisa, children Morgan and Justin of Inverness, IL; daughter, Barbara Lanier Frantonius, children Rebecca and Katherine of Lake Forest, CA; three stepchildren: Martha Christy Shimeall, husband Kirk, children Clark and Anson of Corvallis, OR, David A. Christy and wife Beth of Wilmington, N.C., and Beth Christy Ciche and husband Dennis, children Jon, Jared and Jeffrey of Franklin, WI; one great-grandson, Gabe Grandone; nephews, Stephen Lanier DDS, Fairfax VA, Robert S. Lanier MD, Cheyenne WY, and Keith S. Lanier MD, Portland, OR. He also leaves his loving Scottie dog, Meggie. Dr Lanier was a member of the Missouri, Wisconsin and Virginia state medical societies; Kiwanis, Rotary, and Scottish Rite Clubs; Tripoli Shrine and Masonic Lodge; and the American Legion. He served as Chairman of Trustees Floyd United Methodist Church and worked to establish the Floyd County United Fund. His support for the Jessie Peterman Library will be greatly missed. He loved living in rural Floyd County, his family, travel and reading. Per Andy's wishes there will be no funeral. All friends are invited to a Memorial Service scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the Floyd United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library Endowment Fund, Box 567, Floyd, VA. The family wishes to thank the Rev. Richard Gregory and the ICU staff of Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their caring support.
