Henry Altizer Obituary

Henry F. Altizer Henry F. Altizer, age 91 of Tazewell, VA, died Fri., Nov. 5, 2010 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV. Born Feb. 13, 1919 at Cliffield, VA, he was a son of the late George Elbert Altizer and Bertie Patton Altizer. He was a member of the Tazewell Christian Church and the Christian Men's Fellowship. Mr. Altizer was a US Army Air Force Veteran of World War II and was a life member of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, VA. He was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA Local # 2322 at Amonate. He also worked for a time at the Pocahontas Shop. He was a former member of the North Tazewell Lions Club and the Tazewell Moose Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth Witt, Ruby Suiter, Ella Lambert, and Helen Lockhart; and two brothers, Hoyt Altizer and Charles Altizer. He is survived by his wife, Edith Griffin Altizer; two sons, David Altizer and wife, Lori, of Fort Wayne, IN, and Eddie Altizer and wife, Sharon, of Mechanicsville, VA; two sisters, Irene Nichols of Bluefield, WV, and Jean Strickland of Suffolk, VA; six grandchildren, Sarah Altizer, Matthew Altizer, Chuck Altizer, Lonnie Altizer, Stephen Altizer, and James Henry Altizer; three great grandchildren, Grayson Altizer, Bailey Altizer, and Xavier Altizer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Mon., Nov. 8, 2010 at the Tazewell Christian Church in Tazewell, VA, with the Rev. Michael Stump officiating. Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA, where military graveside rites were conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post # 7136 of Tazewell, VA. Grandchildren served as pallbearers. The family received friends at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA, from 6-8 p.m. Sun., Nov. 7, 2010. The family requests memorial contributions be directed to Tazewell Christian Church, 302 E. Pine St., Tazewell, VA 24651.
