Cecil Baxter

XENIA — Cecil Richard Baxter was born in Xenia, OH to Cecil McKinley and Cora Saunders Baxter, the oldest of three children. He graduated from Xenia High School in 1940. As a young man he sold cookies out of his wagon during the depression, and bagged groceries at Kennedy's Grocery. After High School he secured a job as a typist at Wright Patterson Field. In 1941, he traveled to the Island of Trinidad where he performed clerical duties as a civilian. He joined the Army Air Corps while in Trinidad where he served until the end of WW2. Dick, as his friends and family called him, was honorably discharged and came home to marry his sweetheart, Verna May Byerman of Springfield, OH. He was hired back as a Civil Servant and worked on the Atlas Missile project and retired at age 50. During that time he moved to California with his wife Verna and only daughter, Carol Ann Baxter. After retiring, Dick and Verna traveled all over the country in their RV and lived in Ohio, Missouri, Florida and New Mexico for many years. Dick and Verna moved to Sun City, Prescott, and Glendale, AZ. After a full and exciting life, Dick passed into the arms of his Savior on July 11, 2014 holding the hand of his wife, Verna May. Dick is survived by his wife of 68 years, Verna May Baxter, his two sisters, Marguerite Wolf and Betty Lou Jack, his daughter and son-in-law Carol and James Ward, grandson Chris Ward, granddaughter Bonnie Chamberlain, 4 Great-Grandchildren: Aaron, Jordan, Madison, Kathryn and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation hours are 5 PM to 7 PM on Friday, July 18th at the McColaugh Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at McColaugh Funeral Home in Xenia, OH on Saturday, July 19th at 10 AM and also at Glencroft Retirement Center Chapel in Glendale, AZ on Saturday, July 26th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either in Peoria, AZ or Glencroft Friendship Fund in Glendale, AZ.
