Donald Lee Colbert

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. Donald Lee Colbert, 85, of Michigan City, IN passed away peacefully at 10:44 a.m., Wednesday, June 19, 2013 in Rittenhouse Senior Living of Michigan City.

He was born December 11, 1927 in Champaign, IL to James R. and Ura (Reichard) Colbert.

Donald was a graduate of the University of Illinois where he had played basketball. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. Donald honorably served in the Korean War. He loved nature, beach walks, traveling, site seeing, gardening, and was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

He married Helen Thornhill on Sept. 22, 1956, in Xenia, Ohio, where he lived for over 30 years while working with computers for the Dayton Power & Light Company. They had a son, Kenneth Thornhill Colbert, who passed in 2001, and a daughter, Katharine Colbert Kraeck, of Yardley, PA, who survives. Helen passed away in 1985.

On November 8, 1993, in La Porte, IN, he married Barbro (Swanson) Colbert, who survives.

Also surviving are two step sons, Erik (Tami) Rauch of Westville, Kurt (Linda) Rauch of California; a son-in-law John Kraeck of PA, two sisters, Lois Salisch of AZ, Jacqueline (Luther) Terry of IL; seven grandchildren, Emily, Alison, Tommy, Rebecca, Elliott, Kaitlyn, and Megan; two great grandchildren, Hailey and Brayden.

Preceding in death were his parents; two brothers; one sister; and one son.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 28, 2013 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte (219)362-3100 with Rev. Phillip Burke officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. A flag presentation service will be conducted by the La Porte Honor Guard.
