XENIA Josefa "Jo" Marie Collins, age 84, of Xenia, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at Greene Memorial Hospital. She was born on June 15, 1929 in Poland .
She was the daughter of Josef and Marie Malasch. Jo was separated from her parents and 5 brothers during WWII as a result of the holocaust and never saw them again. She was able to gain employment on an Air Force Base in Germany, where she met and married her late husband, then later relocating to the United States. She was a self employed seamstress who later retired from Elder Beerman. She used her love of flowers and gardening to beautify the grounds at John Sale Manor, being recognized with multiple awards.
She is survived by her daughters: Emmally E. Mercer of AZ; Karin B. Keaton of Xenia; MaryAnn (Kurt) Flowers of KY; and Ronda Howard of Xenia; 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. A granddaughter, Charo Rebecca Mercer preceded her in death.
Jo loved people and left a lasting impression on those she met. She was a remarkable lady who endured horrible atrocities throughout her life and yet was not only very forgiving herself, but encouraged others to forgive as well.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, October 26, 2013 at McColaugh Funeral Home, Inc., 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Friends may call from 6-8 pm Friday at the funeral home. Interment to follow in Valley View Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be made to www.mccolaughfuneralhome.com.
