XENIA Pastor Emeritus Leroy J. Stills was born June 11, 1927 in Xenia, Ohio, the youngest son of John and Aray Stills. He was the youngest of eight children. He attended Lincoln Elementary, received his high school diploma from East High School where he was a member of the basketball team and drum major for the band. He did undergraduate work at Central State University, and graduate level work at Payne Theological Seminary. He earned his livelihood as a barber in Xenia for 17 years before accepting a position with the Dayton Post Office. In 1987 he retired as postal supervisor. He served in the United State Army for 1 1/2 years, and was honorably discharged.
In 1985, Pastor Stills was called to pastor Middle Run Baptist Church. In May of 2003, the First Baptist Seminary at Anderson, South Carolina conferred on him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Divinity.
Pastor Emeritus Stills retired as the 23rd pastor of Middle Run on May 31, 2010 and the title of Pastor Emeritus was bestowed on him at that time.
Pastor Emeritus Stills previously held offices in many organizations, among which were the Springfield District of the Western Union, The Deacons & Ministers District of the Western Union, the Ohio Baptist Association, the African American Ministerial Alliance and the Dayton Ministerial Alliance.
Pastor Emeritus Stills loved the Lord with all his heart and never met a stranger. He was well known at all conventions, the Dayton Ministerial Alliance, the area African American Ministerial Alliance, Xenia Ministerial Alliance as well as in the Post Office, banks, groceries and on the streets of Xenia.
Pastor Emeritus Stills went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 16, 2013.
Pastor Emeritus Stills leaves to lovingly remember him Virginia Phillips Stills, the love of his life for 62 years: his five children: Ann Johnson, Dayton Ohio; Eugene (Cynthia) Johnson, Tumwater, Washington; James Johnson, Columbus, Ohio; Judith (James) Johnson, Plainfield, Illinois and Ronald (Diane) Stills, Columbus, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, nieces, nephews, the Middle Run Baptist Church family and a host of friends and loved ones.
Pastor Stills Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 4 - 7 p.m. at Middle Run Baptist Church, 1000 East Church Street Xenia, Ohio. Service will be held on Monday October 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Middle Run Baptist Church with Reverend Shaw officiating. Internment will follow at Valley View Memorial Gardens Xenia, Ohio.
