FAIRBORN — Robert "Bob" Waring Fitzgerald, age 73 of Fairborn, OH, formerly of Gulfport, MS, passed away on Saturday April 19, 2014 at Hospice of Dayton with his family at his side. Bob was born August 10, 1940 in Middletown, NY, and was a resident of the Cornwall, NY area for most of his youth; graduating from Cornwall Central High School in 1958. After serving his country for three years in the US Navy he embarked on a 35 year career in US Civil Service; including service at the US Military Academy, West Point, NY, USAF at Stewart Field, Newburgh, NY, US Naval Oceanographic Office, Suitland, MD and the US Naval Research Laboratory at Stennis Space Center, MS. He retired in 1994 and followed with employment as head of security at The Hancock Bank in Gulfport, MS for seven years. Bob and his wife, Phyllis Hinman Fitzgerald relocated to Fairborn, OH, in September of 2005, having lost their home of 30 years in Gulfport, MS to Hurricane Katrina. Together, they forged a new beginning, close to their family and moved on with life and their retirement plans. Bob was a devoted family man, who enjoyed being involved with his children and grandsons. He took pleasure in traveling, most sports, and never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Fitzgerald of Newburgh, NY; a grandson, Jesse Lee Algarin, II of Gulfport, MS; daughter-in-law, Lisa D. Fitzgerald of Fairborn, OH; and lifelong friend and foster brother, Robert Goldstein of Knoxville, TN. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Phyllis Hinman Fitzgerald of Fairborn, OH, formerly of Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY; a daughter, Virginia Fitzgerald Algarin; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Scott Fitzgerald and wife Sherry; grandsons, Raymond Scott Fitzgerald, Robert Joseph Fitzgerald, all of Fairborn, OH; brother and sister-in-law, Richard Hinman and wife Joan of Stamford, NY; dear friend and foster sister, Shirley McGuire Licht and husband Richard and family of Knoxville, TN; step-brother, Ray Fitzgerald, Sr. and nephew, Ray Fitzgerald, Jr. of Reading Center, NY; his favorite niece, Madeline Nixon of Cincinnati, OH; as well as extended family and many friends. The family will receive friends on Wednesday April 23, 2014 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. in the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd., Fairborn. A funeral service will be held on Thursday April 24, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in the St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 1501 N. Broad St., Fairborn, Rev. Ruth B. Paulus officiating.
