XENIA — Neil L. Gustafson, age 75, of Xenia went home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday May 28, 2014 at Hospice of Dayton where he passed away peacefully with family and friends by his side. He was born April 4, 1939 in Jamestown, Ohio. He is survived by his mother Helen B. Gustafson and his loving and caring wife of nearly 50 years Vicki (Compton) Gustafson whom he married July 18, 1964. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law Karen and Scott Longwell of Johnson City TN, son and daughter-in-law Erik and Stacey Gustafson of Norwood, MA, and son and daughter-in-law Brian and Suzanne Gustafson of Dayton, OH. Also surviving are his brother and sister-in-law Richard and Terri Gustafson, and Sharon Gustafson of Columbus, OH, sisters-in-law Janet (Joe) Carrico, Catherine Combs (Pete), Lynne Kuschnerus (Rainer) and his grandchildren Kelsey (Eric) Allen, Rachel Longwell, James Gustafson, Phillip Gustafson, and Andrew Gustafson, Amanda Burkholder, Sophie Gustafson, Jacqueline Somer-Ivancic (Frank), Robin Gustafson and numerous nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his father E.V. Gustafson and granddaughter Anna Marie Gustafson. Neil served his country in the United States Army Reserves being honorably discharged in January 1964. For many years Neil worked as a Realtor with Welsh Realty and later as a Loan Officer with Fort Worth Mortgage. Neil was an active member of North Side Christian Church in Xenia, OH and enjoyed serving the Lord as Sunday School teacher, Deacon, usher and in many other capacities. Neil was very active throughout his life and enjoyed playing sports, running, working in the yard and especially enjoyed exercising in his home gym. He also coached youth sports and played in the church softball league. After retirement, Neil took an avid interest in playing golf, especially with his golfing friends from North Side. Neil spent the last four years of his life at Trinity and Greene Oaks Nursing homes before losing his battle with Parkinson's disease. While there he had many wonderful caregivers and, as in the rest of his life, made lots of friends and was loved by all. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in Neil's honor to the UC Gardner Family Center for Parkinson's & Movement Disorders Fund, UCNI Office of Development, PO Box 670570, Cincinnati OH 45267, or to Hospice of Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Monday, June 2, 2014 at North Side Christian Church, 733 Country Club Dr., Xenia with Pastor Greg Delaney officiating. Interment to follow in New Silvercreek Cemetery, Jamestown. Friends may call Sunday from 3-5 PM at the church.
