HAYS — Mr. Allen "Tommy" Lawson Anderson Jr., 88, of Hays, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014 , at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Jim Rhoades officiating. Burial with military honors by Post #1142 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Mr. Anderson was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Wilkesboro to Allen Lawson Anderson Sr. and Phoebe Eleanor Horne Anderson. Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents; and a stepson, Wynn Nelson Barlow. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Edith Smoot Anderson; stepson, Dudley Merrill Barlow and wife, Lynne, of Wilkesboro; one sister, Oma and brother-in-law, Gar Osborne, of North Wilkesboro; and a host of nieces and nephews. Allen made his Profession of Faith in our Heavenly Father on March 21, 2011, at the home of the Rev. Jim and Juanita Rhoades. He served in the United States Navy 1943-1946 aboard the USS Benner D D 807, as fireman first class. At the end of World War II, the Benner was sent to Tokyo Bay, Japan, as part of the occupation forces. Allen observed the signing of the Japanese Peace Treaty, through binoculars, from the deck of the USS Benner on Sept. 2, 1945. After the war, Allen was agent operator for Southern Railway. No food or flowers will be accepted, but memorials may be made to VFW Honor Guard Post 1142, P.O. Box 357, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
