EAST BEND — Edna Louise Lanier Steelman, 88, of East Bend, went to be with Our Heavenly Father Aug. 12, 2014. She was born Jan. 5, 1926, to Harrison and Mary Wall Lanier. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Steelman; her parents; five brothers; and four sisters. She was a longtime devoted member of East Bend Baptist Church and loved her family and church family very much. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Theresa (Jack) Cook, Andrea (Gordon) Simms, Judy Painter (special friend, George Smitherman); her precious grandchildren, Denise (Mike) Wood, Shane (Sandra) Painter, Crystal (Glenn) Stubits. Bethanie (John) Johnson, Jeff (Cassidy) Simms, Bryan (Ruth) Simms; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Emma Wood, Samantha Painter, J.J. Bruce, Keturah, Hadyn, Alethea, Holden, Sophie Simms, Abigail, Michaela, Lydia and Seth Johnson and Ricky Cook. She is also survived by a sister, Nadine Koontz; a sister-in-law, Betty McNeill; a very special long-time sister-friend, Minnie Lee Choplin; and Carolyn Smitherman, who is like a daughter. Special thanks to Pastor Allen Boggs, Hospice Staff, Susan Pettit, Brenda Campbell, Rachel Trivette and Chaplain Brenda McCalop. A funeral service for Mrs. Steelman was held on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at 3 p.m. at East Bend Baptist Church with Pastor Allen Boggs, the Rev. Jimmie Moore and Dr. Gordon Simms officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, Winston-Salem, NC, or East Bend Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
