RED LION James H. Bear, 88, passed away at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at York Hospital. He was the husband of Fairy L. (Fink) Bear to whom he was married to for 69 years. James was born February 20, 1926 in Conewago Township, and was the son of the late James E. and Minnie (Dittenhafer) Bear. He graduated from North York High School in 1943. He was employed by Lyon Metal Products in York as a plant manager for 35 years before retiring in 1983. He was a life member of the 12th Ward Democratic Club; played the clarinet for the Zion View Band, and was a life member of Quickels Evangelical Lutheran Church. James proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In addition to his wife, Fairy, James is survived by his two sons, James H. Bear II and his wife Diane of Mount Wolf, William D. Bear and his wife Elizabeth of Stevensville, Md.; his two daughters, Carol A. Keener and her husband Edward of Airville, Susan E. Smith and her husband Thomas of York; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara McAllister; his two brothers, Robert Bear and Donald Bear; and his sister, Patricia Shindler. His funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Quickels Evangelical Lutheran Church, 60 Canal Road, York. Viewing will be from 12 to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Quickels Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be his pastor, the Rev. Barbara Barry. Arrangements have been entrust ed to The Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Mount Wolf. Flag folding and presentation will be performed by The York County Veterans Honor Guard.
