Thomas, Sarah Ann
WEST YORK Sarah Ann Thomas, 80, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, December 8, 2014. She was born March 6, 1934, in York, a daughter of the late Robert and Katherine (Heiges) Graybill. Ann was a 1952 graduate of York High. She received her teaching degree from Shippensburg and later continued her education at the University of Arizona. Following in her parents' footsteps, she became a teacher and started her long career teaching in the Fayetteville area. Ann returned to York with her family and continued her teaching career within the York City School District. She taught at Hartley, Madison, and Lincoln, and ended her career at Ferguson Elementary, where she was a reading specialist and librarian. Growing up, Ann enjoyed summering with her family in Caledonia where she worked as a lifeguard during the day and as a waitress in the evenings at the Log Cabin Inn and the Graffenburg Inn. During her summers in Caledonia she enjoyed swimming in the pool and creek. Ann was a member of the former Bethany United Church of Christ of York. She was also a former member of the PA Association of School Retirees. She enjoyed planning and going on numerous bus trips to Myrtle Beach each year. Ann enjoyed traveling, playing cards, needle work, and reading. A life time lover of camping and swimming, Ann spent many summers camping with her daughters in Caledonia and Pinchot Park, and with her grandchildren at Outdoor World Campground in Dover. Always an educator, Nana planned many summer trips with her grandchildren to historical places like Gettysburg, Fort McHenry, Valley Forge, and Baltimore's Inner Harbor. In recent years Ann looked forward to the regular luncheons with her friends and spending time with her family. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy E. Thomas of Tremont and Wendi Macneal of West Manchester; two grandchildren, George H. Macneal, IV and his wife, Jan of Dover, and Amy Miller and her husband, Jeremy of Mt. Wolf; three great-grandchildren, Kanyon, Sarah, and Rachael Macneal, all of Dover; a step great-grandson, Scott Miller of Lancaster; a brother, Robert Graybill and his wife, Audrey of Paupack; and a nephew, Scott Graybill and wife, Carrie. Ann was preceded in death by a son-in-law, George H. Macneal, III, and a granddaughter, Betty Jo Macneal. There will be a memorial service on Monday, December 15, 2014, at 6 p.m. at the John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 2114 W. Market St., in West York. KefferFH.com
